The Winds of Cataclysmic Variables

چکیده
We present an observational and theoretical review of the winds of cataclysmic variables (CVs). Specifically, we consider the related problems of the geometry, ionization state, and mass-loss rate of the winds of CVs. We present evidence of wind variability and discuss the results of studies of eclipsing CVs. Finally, we consider the properties of accretion disk wind and magnetic wind models. Some of these models predict substantial angular momentum loss, which could affect both disk structure and binary evolution.

On the Steady Nature of Line-Driven Disk Winds: Application to Cataclysmic Variables
We apply the semi-analytical analysis of the steady nature of line-driven winds presented in two earlier papers to disk winds driven by the flux distribution of a standard Shakura & Sunyaev (1973) disk for typical cataclysmic variable (CV) parameters. We find that the wind critical point tends to be closer to the disk surface towards the inner disk regions. Our main conclusion, however, is that...
متن کاملReinsch Modelling the Spectral Signatures of Accretion Disk Winds in Cataclysmic Variables
Bipolar outflows are known to be present in many diskaccreting astrophysical systems. In disk-dominated cataclysmic variables, these outflows are responsible for most of the features in UV and FUV spectra. However, there have been very few attempts to model the features that appear in the spectra of disk-accreting cataclysmic variables quantitatively. The modelling that has been attempted has b...
متن کاملTheory of Outflows in Cataclysmic Variables
We review the main results from line-driven (LD) models of winds from accretion disks in cataclysmic variables (CVs). We consider LD disk wind models in the hydrodynamic (HD) and magnetohydrodynamic (MHD limits. We discuss the basic physical conditions needed for a disk wind to exist and the conditions for the wind to be steady or unsteady. We also discuss how the line-driven (LD) wind structur...
متن کاملOn the Steady Nature of Line-Driven Disk Winds
We perform an analytic investigation of the stability of line-driven disk winds, independent of hydrodynamic simulations. Our motive is to determine whether or not line-driven disk winds can account for the wide/broad UV resonance absorption lines seen in cataclysmic variables (CVs) and quasi-stellar objects (QSOs). In both CVs and QSOs observations generally indicate that the absorption arisin...
متن کامل0 Circumbinary Disks and Cataclysmic Variable Evolution
The influence of a circumbinary (CB) disk on the evolution of cataclysmic variable (CV) binary systems is investigated. We show that CB mass surface densities sufficient to influence the evolution rate are plausibly provided by the outflows observed in CVs, if the net effect of these winds is to deliver 10−4–10−3 of the mass transfer rate to the CB disk. The torque exerted by the CB disk provid...
